Set up for Success

How can we help our Sterile Processing Department be set up for success? These tips lay the groundwork for a thriving SPD!

At STERIS, we strive for 100% Complete, Sterilized, and On-Time Instrumentation in the sterile processing department. How can we help the normal, everyday processing technician achieve this seemingly impossible expectation in his or her department? Through Education, realistic time frames for processing and turnaround times, clear communication, true support, confidence and appreciation! Your department can be set up for success by following the guidelines below.

  1. Education must be continual and complete. Time for feedback, questions, and observation of processes from both the teacher and the student must occur. This will lead to confidence on the part of the technician and leadership team.
  2. Realistic time frames for processing and turnaround must be established.
  3. These true time constraints MUST be communicated clearly and supported from administration to surgeons to staff. Visual aids displaying turnaround times as well as correct processes will help.
  4. The surgical department is not an island unto itself; many people and areas play a role in patient safety. Departments must work as a cohesive team.
  5. Recognize and appreciate the work it takes to make positive patient outcomes. This leads to dedication, lowered stress, and high proficiency among sterile processing technicians.
