Embracing Change: Finding the RIGHT Solution

Embracing change is about finding the right solution for your Sterile Processing Department. It requires planning, good data and sustainability.

Embracing Change I love ChangeMerriam-Webster defines change as “giving a different position, course, or direction.” Think about your department. What needs to be redirected? Processes, layout, staff balance, and renovation are areas where changes can positively impact throughput and productivity, as well as inspire your staff. Embracing change rather than avoiding it can keep you aware of industry best-practices as well as what works for your department.

Change is emotional and requires thoughtful planning. Change doesn’t need to be monumental to be effective. Small and/or incremental episodes of “redirection” can be just as meaningful as a huge event. Engaging your staff is a good way to begin. Given the opportunity to be heard and really listened to, staff can usually present issues that need a closer look.

Change should be based on data. Select a metric and think about what “better” really looks like. Change for change sake is never the answer and will fatigue staff. Brainstorm potential solutions, and then try them. If one doesn’t work, try another. Don’t give up until you find the right solution for your staff and your department. Collaborate with your Customers; they can be just as effective at thinking outside the box for the right answer the issues they face.

Sustainability is the key to meaningful change. Training doesn’t always equal sustainability. Given the opportunity, staff members tend to revert to their comfort zone. Observation, audits, redirection, reflection, and readjustment are all keys to sustaining changes. You must overcome the mindset of “this is the way we’ve always done it.” Ensure staff members are embracing change instead of simply “making it through” a training session.

So…what does change look like for you? The more successful departments embrace change and, with practice, become better at recognizing opportunities for course adjustments.
